Qualifications

  • In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Providing instruction in student learning and development; and 2) Conducting student counseling session
  • This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11)
  • Teaching: Experience successfully teaching learning and performance strategies applicable to college students and the conditions and practices that facilitate holistic development (i.e., study strategies, performance psychology, critical thinking/self-reflection, first-year experience) to students from diverse backgrounds needing remediation in preparation for a four-year college program;
  • Coaching/Counseling/Mentoring: Experience effectively counseling/coaching students in a learning support role (i.e., using culturally inclusive active listening skills, establishing trust and rapport, facilitating goal setting and problem solving, developing mental skills, monitoring performance, facilitating critical reflection to help students make meaning of their experience, knowing and utilizing referral sources, etc.). Ability to support personal growth and character development of students in and out of the classroom and serve as a mentor for future West Point cadets;
  • Academic accomplishment: An earned bachelor's degree (master's degree or Ph.D./Ed
  • FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration
  • You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an instructor and counselor for a post-high school and college preparatory level course focused on learning and development for a diverse group of students
  • Use the most appropriate classroom teaching methods, including lectures, small-group discussions, demonstrations, etc.
  • Conduct supplementary instruction for students requiring additional assistance
  • Conduct academic counseling sessions: employing active listening skills, establishing rapport, developing problem-solving setting competencies, and providing referrals
  • Attend, conduct, and foster professional development opportunities within and outside the Academic Department, USMAPS, or USMA to share and broaden teaching and counseling knowledge and experience
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays
