Lead ramp agents are responsible for the safe movement of cargo and passengers between an airport’s terminal and aircraft. They ensure that all items are properly loaded onto planes, monitor the flow of traffic to ensure safety, and coordinate with other personnel as needed.

Lead Ramp Agent Job Duties


A lead ramp agent typically has a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:

  • Load and unload cargo using mechanical equipment such as forklifts or pallet jacks
  • Communicate with dispatch personnel to obtain instructions on where to position vehicles for loading or unloading
  • Check cargo for damage or defects before accepting it from the supplier or delivering it to the customer
  • Ensure that the cargo is properly stowed to prevent shifting or damage during transport
  • Assist customers with loading or unloading their vehicles, including driving the vehicle onto a trailer or into a storage facility
  • Move cargo by hand off of trucks or other vehicles and onto shelves or racks in warehouses or retail stores
  • Maintain inventory records of incoming and outgoing shipments to ensure that paperwork is completed accurately and promptly
  • Review manifests to ensure that shipments have been properly billed
  • Stand at the head of the ramp and direct vehicles entering or exiting a facility
